April, 2011

April weather finally started cooperating with the crews to allow for some spring maintenance including patching potholes, removing damaged trees and brush, grinding stumps and sweeping sand from the roadways.  As the snow disappears the damages that were hidden show up and get addressed as well.

On the 11th all of the maintenance crews began the summer work schedule of 4-10 hour days per week.  This allows for increased production without the need for overtime.

Working on Belden Bridge
The Quincy crew found the bumper rails on the Belden bridge had deteriorated to the point of needing replacement, with all the upcoming events scheduled for that area we decided to make the repairs a priority and get it taken care of before summer.

They also performed a bank stabilization project on Beskeen Lane along Spanish Creek.  Public Works had received a report that the creek was undermining the roadway, after obtaining the appropriate permits the crew placed riprap through the effected area to protect the road.

The Beckwourth and Graeagle crews worked together to repair a section of Delleker Road that had been damaged due to ground saturation and fresh water springs that had water flowing through the asphalt and running down the road and onto private properties

The work included saw cutting the asphalt, digging trenches across the road then backfilling the ditches with clean cobble rock and perforated pipe to allow the water to leach out of the roadbed and into a drainage ditch system.

The Greenville crew began preparations for a chip seal project that is planned for mid-June. This work includes crack filling as well as ditch and shoulder maintenance.

All areas are preparing to begin spring opening.  In a normal snow year the crews would start at Bucks Lake and Chester mid-April, this year we decided to hold off for two more weeks to allow for more melt and start on May 2nd.
