June 2011

June 2011

June began with the last snowstorms of the season and ended with highs in the 90s!

Most of the crews kept busy with spring opening throughout the month.  As the Quincy crew got through the deepest snow on the Bucks-Oro highway they split forces and sent some of the equipment towards Laporte to assist that crew.  On Thursday 6-23 late in the day both roads were open.  The only roads not passable now are some of the unpaved back roads that typically melt out on their own.  Public Works Crews spent seven weeks pounding away at the snow with heavy equipment including tracked dozers (D-5, D-6, D-7 and D-8 Caterpillars) all wheel drive graders, snow blowers and loaders, it’s not unusual to see that much snow during spring opening but it was unusual to see it that late in the season.

On the 13th we pulled employees together from most of the crews to perform a chip-seal project on some of the roads in the Indian Valley area.  In just three days the crew covered almost 24 lane miles using 216.44 tons of chip-oil and 1536 tons of 3/8”chipped aggregate, then covered the entire project in one day on the 20th with 74.89 tons of fog-oil.

When the traffic paint is received the paint crew with then complete the project by adding new striping, although we don’t have a delivery schedule for the paint yet?

The weather finally dried the roadbed enough by mid-month for the Beckwourth crew to complete a drainage/storm damage repair in Delleker by patching it with asphalt, thank you to the residents for understanding that the delay was due to weather conditions.

On the 22nd Public Works employees with management responsibilities attended a training presented by Alexander Sperry of Shaw Valenza with the topic of Progressive Discipline and Understanding The Process.  Alex provided some useful information in the form of a power point as well as handouts.

Now that summer has found us, the crews will begin catching up on spring maintenance such as grading and drainage work, hazard tree and stump removal, brush cutting and patching.

Don’t forget to place your bids on surplus equipment from Public Works on-line auction at www.barnoneauction.com before the auction ends at 3:00 pm on July 15th.
