July 2011

 July was a blur of maintenance activities countywide including work such as;

  • Mowing roadside brush and weeds.
  • Patching damaged and worn asphalt roads.
  • Grading unpaved roads.
  • Shoulder and ditch repairs from winter weather.

 The first load of traffic paint arrived allowing the crews to begin striping the roads; we hope to receive the remainder of the paint in time to apply it before the weather changes.

 The crews removed the last few snowdrifts from county roads on the 21st making it the latest opening any of the employees could remember.

Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) is continuing the reconstruction project on a portion of the Bucks-Oro and Big Creek Roads.  The new bridge over Grizzly Creek near Grubbs Cow Camp is now open

They are gearing up to begin the cold in-place recycle project that will be followed with a complete hot mix asphalt overlay before winter weather returns (hopefully).

Most of the districts have received their annual allotments of de-icer sand and are now hauling asphalt grindings that Caltrans released to Public Works.  The grindings are used to enhance portions of unpaved county roads by reducing dust and the frequency of maintenance.

On the 27th all Public Works employees attended a training presented by Jennifer Shaw of Shaw Valenza with the topic of preventing sexual harassment and bringing respect and professionalism to the workplace.  Jennifer provided some useful information in the form of a power point as well as handouts.

The Public Works on-line auction at www.barnoneauction.com ended at 3:00 pm on July 15th netting over $109,000.00 to this department, over $10,000.00 to Transit, over $7,500.00 to Quincy Fire and almost $1,700.00 to the General fund.  Along with the revenue, the auction removed 45 lots (equipment, vehicles and misc.) reducing the maintenance costs associated with older equipment.
