February 2012

February had a mixed bag of weather, during dry conditions the road crews continued with spring maintenance activities such as asphalt patching, shoulder/ditch cleaning, hazard tree/stump removal and cutting roadside brush.  Plumas County also received up to 12” of snow mid-month then dry warm weather again forcing crews to plow portions of roads that normally stay closed to wheeled vehicles until spring.  On the last day of the month, winter came back dropping as much as 26” of snow reclosing those roads and keeping the road crews busy plowing snow on the remainder of the county roads.

The Equipment Maintenance crew found time to attend a certification seminar on the care, proper use and inspection of various lifting slings including Web Slings, Round Slings, Wire Rope Slings and Alloy Chain Slings.  The class was held in Quincy by Lift All and sponsored by Munnell & Sherrell Inc.

The Federal High Way Administration (FHWA) Central Federal Lands Division working with other agencies including Plumas County Public Works held two meetings in February to discuss two projects for Plumas County.  One was held in Red Bluff as a preconstruction meeting for the High Bridge replacement and Chester Warner Valley Road (Old Red Bluff Road) realignment project and one was held in Portola as a public comment session for the Beckwourth-Genesee rehabilitation project.

Public Works will be holding interviews to fill the two vacant positions in the equipment maintenance division later this week.
