The mission and goals of The Public Works Department are to provide the
best, safest and most convenient road and bridge system possible.
The major activities are system maintenance, improvement through
maintenance and construction, acquisition and maintenance of equipment,
and the administration of these functions. Many rules are set by
statue, yet the Board of Supervisors is the policy maker. Some
funding comes from a formula share of the gas tax, while other revenue
sources may require competing with other agencies for project
amounts. 12.5 percent of the USFS timber receipts have traditionally
provided a big portion of the Road Fund, but have been reduced
substantially since 1993-94.
