PLUMAS COUNTY RECYCLING INFORMATION

Recycling Opportunities, Drop-off Locations,
And Annual Household Hazardous Waste Events


RECYCLING OPPORTUNITIES
Beverage Container Recycling /CRV- All Plumas County Recycling Centers are certified to pay the Calif. Redemption Value for Beverage Containers. As of January 1, 2004 rates have increased to 4 cents for bottles under 24 oz., and 8 cents for bottles 24 oz. and larger for beverage containers made of Aluminum, Glass, Plastic, and metal.
Generic Glass, Plastic, Tin Recycling- All Recycling Centers accept brown, green and clear glass ( beverage or food containing), plastic containers labeled with the recycling symbol containing a # 1 through #7 (excluding Styrofoam), rinsed, caps removed. Chester, Greenville, Quincy, Graeagle and Delleker Recycling Centers also collect tin cans, rinsed with paper labels removed.
Computer Monitors and Televisions- Devices containing Cathode Ray Tubes may be recycled at all Plumas County Transfer Sites during operating hours with a $3.15 per unit charge. See Site List below for times of operation or call your waste disposal service for details.
Automotive Oil/ Fluids and Battery Recycling- Collection is available at no charge at all Plumas County Transfer Stations to residents who change their own motor oil and antifreeze. Used Oil Filters, Car batteries and Plastic Oil Bottles up to 5 quarts in size are also accepted. All Plumas County Used Oil Collection Sites are Certified with the State of California (with the exception of LaPorte) and will pay an incentive of 16 cents per gallon for used motor oil. 5 gallon per day limit (no commercials) in tight capped containers. Plastic Oil Bottles and Jugs- They are now officially recyclable in Plumas County at all Transfer Sites and at the Quincy and Delleker Recycling Centers. All #2 plastic oil bottles and jugs up to five quarts in size. Put the screw lids back on to avoid leakage. They are chipped into granules and sent to Modesto for cleaning and recycling.
Tires and Other Automotive- Tires with rims removed are recyclable with a fee according to size at all Plumas County Transfer Sites and the Portola Reclamation Site at the Portola Landfill. Rims may also be recycled.
Automobiles may be recycled during regular business hours at the Greenville Transfer Site and the Portola Reclamation Site. Disposal guidelines must be met and vary at each Site (such as all fluids removed, radiators and pans removed, title info., etc.) Please call ahead to Feather River Disposal or Intermountain Disposal to get details and make arrangements for drop off.
Metal Appliances- Appliances may be recycled at all Plumas County transfer sites and the Portola Environmental Reclamation Center at the Portola Landfill during advertised business hours for a fee. Call your disposal company for pricing and for details on removing CFC’s (freon) from refrigerators and transmission oil from washers before recycling. Scrap metal is accepted with no charge at the Greenville Transfer Site during posted business hours.  The Gopher Hill refuge site is now permanently closed
Other Metal- Bins are available at all Plumas County Transfer Sites and the Portola Environmental Reclamation Center for recycling scrap metal items. A fee is charged. Keep these items separate from other refuge and check with the attendant at the site. Scrap metals are accepted with no charge at the Greenville Transfer Site during posted business hours.  The Gopher Hill refuge site is now permanently closed.
Curbside Collection Recycling Programs- Curbside recycling programs are offered in West Quincy by the Quincy Services District and in Chester by the Chester Public Utilities District. Both programs are operated by Feather River Disposal. The City of Portola and Intermountain Disposal Co. offer Curbside Recycling within the city limits of Portola. See the chart below or contact your disposal service for details.
Commercial Curbside Recycling- Offered by Feather River Disposal in Chester, Greenville and Quincy to local business interested in recycling Cardboard, Office Paper, Newsprint, Magazines, and Glass, Plastic, Aluminum, and Metal Beverage Containers. Call Feather River Disposal at 283-2065.
Green Waste Recycling- Plumas County residents may recycle clean yard wastes including pine needles, bark, tree limbs and branches, grass and plant trimmings, and clean wood debris at Sierra Pacific Mill in Quincy, the Mt Lassen Power Plant in Westwood, and the Portola Reclamation Site (Portola Landfill). Days and times of operation and other details are listed in the chart below.
Backyard Composting Workshops- The annual two hour composting workshop will be presented at the Dawn Institute Gardens each Spring.  There will be two workshops in June 2006.  Friday, June 16th from noon to 1 p.m. at Sierra Valley Farms Farmers' Market near Beckwourth, and Saturday June 17th from 10 a.m until noon at the Dawn Institute Organic Garden at Indian Falls.  Call Bob Boschee at 283-4650 for more information on either workshop.  The workshops are free to all residents.  The Dawn Institute Gardens are located at Indian Falls on Indian Falls Road.  For more information call Plumas County Public Works at (530) 283-6268 or Bob Boschee at (530) 283-4650.
Annual Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Events- Held each summer by Feather River Disposal for residents in their service area, and once every other summer by Intermountain Disposal for residents in their service area. There is no fee to residential customers. Commercials need to call ahead for pricing and limits.  Household Hazardous Materials may include household cleaners, automotive products, paint and solvents, and pesticides.  Any product labeled WARNING, CAUTION, POISONOUS, TOXIC, FLAMMABLE, CORROSIVE, REACTIVE OR EXPLOSIVE is considered hazardous.  Call your waste disposal company for details on what may be disposed and limits per auto.  Call Feather River Disposal for more information at 283-2065 or (800) 300-1046.
HHW Event is scheduled for June 3, 2006 at the Chester Transfer Site.

The Gopher Hill Landfill and Transfer site is now permanently closed.  This is a long-term closure and no refuge dumping of any kind will be allowed in the future.  Scrap metal may be taken to the Greenville Transfer Site with no fee.  For a fee, metals and appliances may also be taken to any Plumas County transfer site.

Green Waste Recycling Programs
Plumas County residents may recycle clean yard wastes including pine needles, bark, tree limbs and branches, grass and plant trimmings, and clean wood debris at the following locations.

Sierra Pacific Industries, Lee Road, Quincy, 283-2820
Saturdays and Sundays, 7 am to 4 pm, all year,
Clean yard and wood debris. No dirt, rocks, nails, paint, or metal allowed.
24-inch length limit. No fee. Site attendant inspects load.

Mt. Lassen Power, 256-3157, between Clear Creek and Westwood, on State Route 147
Open April 1, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 am to 4 pm.
Starting May 1 through Sept 30, open Tuesday through Saturday, 8 am –4 pm.
October l to October 31, open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8 am to 4 pm.
Closed November through March
$1.50 per cubic yard fee for clean yard waste and wood debris. Site attendant inspects load.
